At the end of last year, I engaged Lisa Morgan at Maddern Accountants to assist me with a complex Australian tax matter involving foreign income and direct enquiries to the ATO. From the outset, I explained that one of the main reasons I was engaging a new accountant was because I was looking for a more personalised service and better communication than I had experienced previously. I also made it clear that I was happy to make myself available for meetings, provide additional information whenever required, and pay for any extra time needed to ensure my circumstances were fully understood. Once I accepted the engagement and paid the invoice in full upfront, I found that communication became very limited. After payment, I didn't hear from the firm for a couple of weeks until I contacted them to ask when work would commence, as I was conscious of the ATO deadlines. Throughout the engagement, I regularly provided information and encouraged questions to ensure we had a shared understanding of the facts. However, I found communication remained brief and infrequent. On several occasions, I went weeks without receiving an update and had to repeatedly follow up to receive responses or copies of correspondence relating to my matter. Tax matters can be highly stressful and, in my view, responsiveness, communication and client care/customer service are just as important as technical expertise. Unfortunately, I never felt supported throughout the process and often felt ignored rather than treated as a valued client. Based on my personal experience, I would not recommend this firm to anyone looking for a collaborative, responsive and client-focused accounting service. I genuinely hope this feedback helps improve the experience of future and potential clients.
